The BBC is to offer audiences an alternative to Saturday nights shows like The X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, introducing an evening of culture in a bid to appeal to viewers bored with the talent show format.

Programming will include a range of poetry and dance shows and a behind-the-scenes look at the auction house Christie's, with the channel's new controller Patrick Holland commenting 'We will make Saturday nights a place to indulge in culture'.
